Brain Blancmange

Tom and I have been having the best time thinking of new and exciting halloween ideas. I want to make sure that we fully indulge in all things halloween. This week we decided to do something that turned out to be so gross none of us wanted to touch it at first!

I have used blancmange as a messy play activity before. Although it takes a little more preparation than most activities such as jelly, it does make for a very exciting activity. You have to cook the blancmange and let it set so if you want to play with it you have to think ahead a little bit. I made it the day before to give it a really good amount of time to set before we play with it.

I set the blancmange using the brain mould that we picked up in Hobbycraft. The next day when we were ready to play I got it out the fridge a little bit before we were going to play with it as I didn't want it to be so freezing cold that Tom wouldn't touch it.

I took the blancmange out of the mould and put it onto a tray for Tom. Without me needing to help him he just jumped straight in with his hands and started to play. It really did feel like brain. Tom seemed to be having a really good time exploring independently. Once Tom had been exploring alone for some time I started to help Tom to squish the brains and change the texture of the material.

We all got pretty messy and Nala was desperate to have a taste! This was a really fun Halloween activity that we will be doing again! Next time we could use jelly or a hard custard type material.

If you are around Hobbycraft be sure to pick up a brain mould! Next time Tom and I are going to try and add jelly sweets into the mould before it sets to add some extra gore!
