Custard of the day...

Tom loves messy play...we have told you about lots of the different messy play ideas we do. Custard has to be one of the messiest.

I thought Tom would love custard because it was smooth and of course I would warm it up. I warmed it to a lukewarm temperature so it wouldn't be too hot for Tom to keep his hands in, but warm enough so that it wouldn't give him a shock.

I introduced Tom to the custard using his right hand first. Tom can be a little tactile defensive with his left hand, not all of the time but I always try and introduce him to something with his right hand incase his left is sensitive. I use the hand under hand technique I wrote about in Friday blog. This is the best way to start an activity with Tom as it relieve any anxiety for Tom.

Tom got his hand stuck in, there was no apprehension at all. Tom was super confident, this was so lovely to watch. We played for a really long time, Tom becomes so relaxed with this type of messy play that he will actually doze off for a little cat nap. I think it is really important that even though Tom is sleeping I still continue to play with his hands, whilst Tom is sleeping his nerves are still working and you can still make connections with the brain.

After Tom had finished he got his usual warm bubbly water with his Bodyshop bath bubble. Tom loves this part of any activity! He normally gets a little hand rub too as a well done. Tom loves his mini pamper!

The next time we do custard I think I will change it up a little and add another texture in. It may also be nice to make an egg custard with Tom using his switch and then have him play with it once it has set. Let me know if you have any ideas for other sensory play activities.
